Choosing a Rooftop Tent

Every tent in our lineup is hard-shell — aluminum or ABS construction built to handle real trail use without the stress cracks, flex, and gelcoat maintenance softer materials need over time. Beyond that, the differences come down to how the shell opens and how much space you need.

Foldout tents (Freespirit Recreation's Nova and Kali lines) unfold sideways for the most sleeping space relative to their closed footprint. Clamshell tents (Freespirit's Aspen Pro line, and Naturnest's Sirius 2 ABS and Sirius 2 Aluminum) pop open along a hinge for the fastest, simplest setup, most ready in under 30 seconds. Dual-hinge pop-ups (Kali King, Evolution XL) split open from the center for maximum interior width, built for families and larger crews. Triangle pop-ups (Naturnest's Polaris Plus and Polaris 2) use a lighter aluminum-alloy shell that sets up in under a minute, a good entry point if you want hard-shell durability at a lower weight and price.

Before you buy, two numbers matter more than anything else: dynamic weight capacity (how much your roof rack can hold while you're driving, which is the tent's own weight) and static weight capacity (how much it can hold while parked, which includes the tent plus everyone sleeping in it).
